Instax for the People

Following David Wala’s triumph in the 2008 Fujifilm Student Awards his career has gone from strength to strength.

His latest project – Instax for the People is a fascinating idea, David explains more: “This is a personal project aimed at documenting musicians that I have photographed since June 2010. They are individual portraits of band members so it’s not just the front man, it’s a democracy of musicians where all musicians have the same prominence. I do not direct the people in these images apart from telling them to express the mood or the way they feel in the moment.”

All the images were taken on Fujifilm Instax film, David tells us why: “The use of my Instax camera has captured the imagination of people and they are happy to pose and still feel excited and marvel at the magic moment when the picture starts to show through on the paper.”

David doesn’t see Instax for the People as just a short term project: “My aim is to have an exhibition in 2011 of my images. It is also a way to document my local music scene with these images and I aim to revisit the project in the coming years and photograph the same people and see how they have progressed.”
