I took a roll of Ilford XP2 Super into Morrisons at the weekend. Went to collect it an hour later and I just knew this exchange was going to happen..
-’Ah, Mr. Davies, we don’t do Black and White film’
-’Yes, I know, this is a colour process film so no problem..’
-’No, we’re not allowed, it mucks our machine up. And we can’t print black and white either’
-’Well, you did a black and white digital for me last week’
    -’Well, we sholudn’t have..’

Anyway, I got more or less what I wanted, they’d processed the film, left the negs uncut and they gave me back the £6. I didn’t want prints anyway!

It seems the knowledge is drying up quicker than readily available film!

TIme to get that developing kit I think.

I bought a change bag, a Paterson series 4 tank with some Rodinal and HC-110 and am having a great time developing myself. All of a sudden I can play around with the Exposure Index much easier and without extra expense.

You can always send your film to Ilford by post. They do C41 black and white and will print it for you. I am going down the route of home development mainly, although I still have some C41 B+W film left.

warning about processing C41 B&W films : If you ‘Pre-soak’ the Fuji ( made by Ilford ) or the Ilford XP2 Super before putting in the developer it causes reticulation of the gelatine coat on the back of the film — found out when I did a ‘pre-soak’ and saw the reticulation — Ilford technical dept. told me not to pre-soak.

Fuji Neopan 400CN is by far, the best of the B/W C-41 emulsions. Love the stuff. However, I’ve gotten very good and consistent results with Ilfords XP-2 too. For general snapping, I rate them at 320. For portrait work, I rate it at 200. My local “pro” and one hour labs have no problem souping and scanning it.

Well I done some pricing, I use Ilford B&W film, and it costs £19.99 for 36 exposure film to be developed onto 10×8 proper darkroom paper (using lford services) BUT!! if I develop the film myself and send the negatives to be developed onto 10×8 paper it will cost me £2.19 a print times that by 36 prints equals not bloody likely, but they do say the more you get the cheaper it is, so I let Ilford do all the work for £19.99
