I was fascinated, looking through the Images Gallery how few use EI numbers. In most cases members are using box speed. Can I offer or suggest that those who are looking to improve or explore the capabilities of their film reduce box speed by 15% whilst maintaining normal development times. After that consider reducing box speed by 20% and reducing development by 10%- not T-Max-. Later you can vary box speed and development times to tailor the film to you, the photographer, because we are all individuals and I believe you will be very pleasantly surprised

I have recently started looking at playing with EI speeds. I will trying out a few films prob Portra 800 shot at 600/400 and some Fuji 400H at 300.

As all my film is now outdated I always REDUCE the ASA for negative films but for colour transparency I find the box speed is still good as the D-max is reduced in the second, colour developer because of the fog level– it’s a question with the slide how much D-max loss is ‘acceptable’ for outdated E6 films.

The plan of using a film speed of less than “box speed” is fine with negative film and I often do it myself but it can be a recipe for disaster with transparency stock. The resultant overexposure bleaches out all the highlights and there is little that can be done to retrieve the situation.

    Just my 2pence worth.

    David.
