Been out shooting Portra 800 (rated at 1600) in some challenging low light conditions last weekend and wow what a lovely film with tremendous exposure latitude and beautiful colours. Just so expensive, mind no worse than Superia 1600 these days which Portra beats the pants off (for me anyway). Was using my Contax G2 with a Planar 35mm f2. Can’t…[Read more]

I have been trying out Agfaphoto Vista Plus 400 as standard fodder for my Contax G2 System in comparison to Fujifilm Superia X-tra 400 and have concluded that:

    a) Vista Plus 400 is most likely out of the Fujifilm stable just rebadged as Agfaphoto, though it is possibly not completely identical to Superia X-tra 400 being maybe a bit less contrasty…[Read more]

Been out and about making photographs of the Autumn colour which is particularly good this year. Used my Zeiss Ikon with my Distagon 18mm, Biogon 35mm and Sonnar 85mm lenses. Film of choice? Fuji Superia X-tra 400. Just love this time of year.

  • Have just acquired a Zeiss Distagon 18mm f4 ZM for Zeiss Ikon rangefinder. What a fab lens. The Zeiss viewfinder I acquired with it (both lens and finder are used but in lovely condition) is beautifully made, bright, clear and distortion free and am I really impressed by it. There are some real used bargains out there if you know where to look.…[Read more]

I was out and about yesterday with my G2 and my Biogon 21mm f2.8 yesterday photographing the interior of The Priest House, a 15th century cottage in the village of West Hoathly. Fab old house well preserved in its original condition. The G2 and the Biogon 21mm did well in the dimly lit interiors of the house ably assisted by a couple of rolls of…[Read more]

Took my Contax G2 along with a Biogon 35mm and a Sonnar 90mm to the Bluebell Railway this week to photograph one on my fave subjects steam railways. In the engine shed there we’re some great photo opportunities […]

Been trying out a Hologon 16mm and had a bit of finger trouble – literally – the lens angle of view is wide I ended including my own fingers in the pictures the first time I used it! Despite its fixed f8 aperture and its scale focusing it is easy to use due to its tremendous depth of focus. Image quality is typically Zeiss with that medium format…[Read more]

Went off to do digital at the start of the year, conned by all the glittery marketing I guess. After 9 months of messing about in digital hyperspace, I have firmly returned to the real photography universe and film (Fuji 160C and 400H) and my beloved G2 cameras with their lovely Zeiss lenses. For me anyway, digital is stills video imaging and far…[Read more]

  • For my 35mm negative film work I have the film developed and scanned to CD by Boots in the high street. They use a fuji mini lab to do this and the resulting scans are more than good enough for publication to my […]

  • My favourite M camera isn’t made by Leica, rather it is a Zeiss Ikon ZI with a set of Zeiss ZM lenses to go with it. Nice!

  • I would agree that with some dealers there is a bit of petty larceny going on and that they can get very aggressive when caught out. There are only a couple that I really trust and have built up a relationship […]

Just used the last of my 800Z film that I had stashed away when Fuji discontinued it.
Ho hum! Loved that film and now it is no more here in the UK. I mourn it’s passing.

  • Have acquired and been using a Contax G2 and a set of Zeiss G primes recently. Very nice camera and really lovely lenses. I have also been trying out Fuji Superia 200 in place of my more usual 160C and really like it. I use it mostly for my work photographing heritage steam locomotives where the electronic focusing and high degree go automation…[Read more]
